There’s some good development between Mal and Inara (sort of). I don’t think it pops quite as well as most of the others, but there are plenty of memorable moments throughout. “Heart of Gold” is a decent enough episode in Firefly‘s repertoire. Wash: Man walks down the street in that hat, people know he’s not afraid of anything.The Battle of Du-Khang (especially Mal’s entrance).

That aside, the rest of the episode is full of classic Whedon wit. Things could’ve gone smoother if they simply informed Tracy of their plan. I am referring to the twist where Tracy thinks that the crew is turning him in to the Alliance, but they really weren’t. What docks a couple points off of “The Message” is some of the writing, the type of writing you don’t commonly see on Firefly. The ending mixed with the inclusion of Jayne’s infamous hat give this episode some major points, so it pains me to put it at the bottom of my list. That said, this list will most likely feel like me gushing over each episode while arranging them in random order.Īlthough Tracy ended being a bit of a tool, the ending of this episode was still enough to pack an emotional punch.

Ranking the episodes is no easy feat, and even episodes that don’t rank in my top 10 still give us 45 minutes of pure entertainment. Each tells a great story and gives insight into the lives of a wonderful arrangement of characters.

Fox might’ve won the battle, putting us on the losing side, but that in no way puts us on the wrong side.
